Hiking Nottawasaga Lookout Provincial Nature Reserve

The Niagara Escarpment Nottawasaga Lookout Provincial Nature Reserve Part Of The Bruce Trail

While camping at Earl Rowe Provincial Park, I took a day trip to Nottawasaga Lookout Provincial Nature Reserve on the Niagara Escarpment—and I was absolutely amazed by the sheer beauty of this place. As someone who holds hiking in Ontario very close to my heart, this experience truly stood out as something special.

Nottawasaga Lookout is a designated nature reserve that showcases some of the most breathtaking and ecologically significant landscapes along the Niagara Escarpment. As I ventured through the reserve, I was struck by the dramatic interplay of rugged cliffs and deep ravines. These geological features are not only stunning to behold, but they also serve as vital habitats for a wide variety of plant and animal species.

The trails led me through a mix of forested slopes and serene wetlands, where the air was rich with the scent of pine and damp earth. I encountered talus slopes—those jumbled, rocky outcrops at the base of the cliffs—that added a sense of wildness and adventure to the hike. Even more fascinating were the cave and crevice formations, which hinted at the powerful natural forces that have shaped the Escarpment over millennia.

One of the most memorable aspects of the hike was discovering the diversity of plant life. The reserve protects several rare and uncommon species, including an extraordinary variety of ferns. Some of these ferns are so rare that they are only found in Ontario along the Niagara Escarpment, making their presence here all the more remarkable.

All in all, the visit to Nottawasaga Lookout was a deeply enriching experience. It reminded me why hiking in Ontario is not just a hobby for me—it’s a meaningful connection to the land, the ecosystems, and the quiet beauty that surrounds us.
